Tuesday Dec 16th, 2014 Event
Main Presentation:
Reflections on AU 2014 and The Making of the Panasonic Toughpad Ultimate Torture Test
Closing out 2014 we will be taking a look back at the recent Autodesk University conference held in Las Vegas last week. Additionally Kim Lee will be re-presenting his AU class “From Design to Fabrication: Using 3ds Max to Build a Real Rube Goldberg Machine” in which he will discuss how 3ds Max was used during the previs, design and fabrication phases of a recently released short film created for the new Panasonic Toughpad. The final project features a machine spread over an area of more than 90′ by 60′ that includes everything from air cannons to live piranhas with a fabrication schedule of less than 2 weeks. To meet this deadline we will discuss how 3ds Max was indispensable during not only the early previs stage but also during the design phases of the various machine mechanics as well as during the fabrication process using the rapid prototyping capabilities of CNC machining as an output device. We will examine the process of bringing this project to completion along with behind the scenes footage and see how the project’s technical lead Kim Lee worked with Paul Neale used various rigging and dynamics simulation tools like MassFX to speed up design of the various mechanical triggers and releases.
At the end of the meeting we will discuss some of what is being planned for the group in 2015 and we will be looking to get your input. See you all then.
