Juniper Jones delivers fire for Spike

New York based Juniper Jones delivers fire for the Spike network. Bellator Season 8 commercial trailer. Juniper Jones was charged with creating a spot that celebrates the spirit and drive of the individual rising to the occasion in the face of insurmountable challenges. Fire scorches across the screen as the talented fighters showcase their moves. While it appears extremely life like, no practical effects were used. Our team generated the fire completely from scratch in post-production, creating a singular effect that reflects the distinctive brand of Spike TV’s Bellator.

Live action was shot at 120FPS and the CG fire simulations were simulated at 60FPS and it matched up well. All fire was CG created with 3dsmax & FumeFX.
Lead VFX artist Joe Gunn worked on look dev for the fire to make sure it would hold up against real fire footage in case they had to cut in footage. However it was never necessary during this project as FumeFX did the job right. During the project Joe Gunn and fellow artist Russell Boebert continued to hammer out the fire shots for Juniper Jones.

The latest software was used to knock it out of the park both FumeFX v3.5 & 3dsmax 2013 came to the rescue. Pflow was used to drive the trails and each shot was hand animated to track along with the live action plates. The HD renders were handled by 3dsmax’s scanline render engine.

This looks really cool. At first I thought it was comped footage. Was this rendered in mental ray or something else to make it look so good?

Paul thanks for the comments. This was rendered using the default 3dsmax scanline renderer.
