So on a completely different note, I was wondering what establishments everyone in town likes to frequent. I’m looking for everyone’s suggestions and recommendations for everything from lunch or dinner eateries, local bookstores, favorite movie theaters, to you favorite store for buying hard drives. I know these days the big chain and big box stores seems to have taken over and if those are your suggestions that’s fine and good to know. But it would be also interesting to see your suggestions for even small mama-papa establishments that may not be known to our community of artists. Submit your comments and lets see things like, My favorite felafel place, coffee spot, specialty book store, whatever.

Hey Kim! If you’re ever in Greenpoint try Val Diano, Italian restaurant on a Manhattan ave. Great pastas for a moderate price, place run for many years by a really nice Italian man. Really worth to support.
I do like to eat at Cubana Cafe when I’m working in SoHo. Also Vesuvio Bakery or Birthbath I think can’t remember but its in SoHo over on Prince & Thompson area. They have some nice bakery.
AMC theaters in the city I tend to go to when I catch a movie. Imax at Lincoln Center too…
I’ve worked all over this beautiful city and these are my go to spots for:
Eating in SoHo:
Mooncake Café on Watt St has some extraordinary thai/Vietnamese/Chinese food at great prices. Try their Miso Glazed Salmon and you’ll see what’s up!!
Dominique Ansel Bakery – On Spring St between Thompson & Sullivan. Grab a sandwich and a seat at their back patio! Buildings block the noise so during that lunch hour, you kind of feel like you’ve escaped for a bit.
Here Café on Dominic Street brews some good coffee.
For a Midtown post work soirée – check out the Lambs Club Lounge at the Chatwal Hotel. I had a hand in designing and visualizing it! Ask for Gil to make you an’old fashioned’ . He’s an artist with cocktails.
Fraunces Tavern – suppose to be the oldest structure on the island where George Washington delivered his farewell speech to his men after the revolutionary war. Now that I work down in the Financial District, I’ve gotta find some new eating spots.
Stone Street Tavern – Again, lots of history in this neighborhood! The first paved road in the city. After April 1st, they lay out tables right on the street. Open air, food and pints!! What more can you ask for?
Nice thread
keep em comin!
Kim! First off, I’m so glad the site is coming along so well. Its a vast improvement on what was once in its place.
On my Notes as to where I go, its usually where my feet take me, but its also usually for a great cup of joe. Konditori is a great little place on Allen St in LES. Love the Swedish take on coffee. Another place I love is Little Brown in the UES on Lex. Its the perfect mix of coffee and chocolate (they also have some great skinny choices, but make sure they hear you say skinny!). Oh, and if you must have a croissant, this is the place to get them. Made fresh and they go fast, so you know you’re getting fresh. Another place I love, but haven’t frequented lately cause I’m never in the neighborhood, is Cafe Grumpy in Chelsea. They have some really great choices from all over. It gets crowded, so be prepared to grab your cup and go. Also watch out for the prices, some coffees are rare and cost a pretty penny (I think they are worth it).
I find stumbling around can get you some great results. And if anyone knows of great coffee, let me know!
If you’re in Chelsea, there’s an awesome Italian restaurant called Tappo. (24th between 5th and 6th). If you like thin crust pizza you’ll love this place. Great ambience and good beer selection too!
If you’re ever in tribeca, check out La Colombe, probably some of the best coffee I’ve ever tried. I was lucky enough to work in the same building for a while, on corner of Church and Lispenard.
There are a few more locations along Lafayette St.
There is a Brazillian restaurant called Berimbau on Carmine st, they carefully cook your meal It is delicious everytime. And there is a hidden place on Varick and Downing, It is called Camelia, their lunch special comes with white or red sangria, perfect for Fridays. Anthony I have to try that bakery in on Spring st. There is also the Ear, it is one of the oldest bars in NY. When the weather is nice it is great to go on the West side near the water to get away from the city noises
@marvin…oh I remember EAR! Good times over there. It would be great to hold a MUG on the Frying Pan.
Puck Fair on Lafayette and Houston has a great downstairs bar area that I see rented out for parties quite a bit. They have good food and a great beer list.
Let me preface my post by saying im British so my knowledge of NY is pretty sketchy. I won’t be responsible if you get lost having followed some of my directions lol!
I put together a little Google maps link for some of the guys who are coming over to TJ in May. You can take a look here:
http://g.co/maps/3nn6r
Red dots – Food
Green dots – Food/Attractions
Blue dots – Attractions
Yellow dots – Work
Aqua dots – Lunch
Obviously im no local but these are just a few of the places we have found which we like. Ignore the tourist attractions, how British of me!
If i get time i will add all your great suggestions to my link. Would be cool to get a map up and running of great places to go.
Mark
wow just had a look at that link Mark, quite a bit of coverage considering how much time you’ve been here. Nice.
I was in SoHo/Tribeca for some time so I had all the “affordable” spots scoped out. The Sunrise Mart (japanese) @ Broome & Wooster, and Lupe’s (mexi-cali) @ 6th Ave & Watts are my faves for lunch under $10.
Heading up Canal St toward Chinatown, there’s a great BahnMi (Vietnamese sandwich) shop oddly called Sau Voi Corp. @ Lafayette and Walker St. Their fresh-baked bread is off-the-hook, and though some of their stuff’s a bit “exotic” for my palate, most of their sandwiches are delicious and under $6 !!!
When in DUMBO: Forager’s Market on Front St. has a great salad bar. Good handmade sandwiches too (but a bit pricey). Also on Front St, hidden on the block past the Starbuck’s is 7 Stars Deli, that has amazing tacos every Thursday for a fiver.
Midtown: if you want to avoid all the corporate stuff (Pret, Cosi, MetroCafe, etc.) there a classic old-school diner on 47th btw 5th & 6th ave called Evergreen Coffee Shop.
